Yarn Along

Joining in with Ginny from Small Things.

I am only four rows in with the Sweet Memories Cowl I started last week.  It is a fast knit once cast on, that is if I find the time to knit!  I need to get it done quickly though, as my list of Christmas gifts to make grows by the day.

I finished the book I was reading last week, My Last Duchess by Daisy Goodwin (also know as The American Heiress).  To be honest, towards the end I was reading it just to find out the ending, as it was dragging on a little for my liking.  Thankfully the ending did sum up a few things for me.  I found it hard not to feel frustrated with the characters and their behaviour in the book at times, but I just keep reminding myself that choices were so limited for women back in the 1880’s, no matter what their financial or social status was.  Let alone the fact, you couldn’t speak your mind in most situations.  One good insight in regards to this was between Cora and her maid, Bertha and how Bertha’s life is so heavily moulded by Cora’s.  I loved the descriptions of the houses in the book.  I am such a sucker for old houses and their estates.

Can’t wait to see what you have all been crafting and reading this week.

This Moment

From Soulemama {this moment} – A Friday ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment.  A moment I want to pause, savour and remember.

I love your moments too.  So feel free to leave a link in the comment section for us all to see.  Have a beautiful weekend.  I really dislike daylight savings, it makes it hard for me to stay up late to join in the fun.  I’ll catch you tomorrow my dear commenters!  Jacinta x

Family Meat Pie

Ah yes, the iconic Aussie meat pie.  While I admit I like pies, there are very few bakeries that can make one that is really good.  We are lucky enough to have a few bakeries locally that make a good pie, but I often wonder what is really in them.  I decided to try my hand at making one that the kids would all eat.  I’m happy to say, they all enjoyed it, in fact, Jairah, who often doesn’t eat dinner, asked for seconds.  That is a successful meal in my opinion.  Thankfully I remembered to write down what I added as I went along.  I’m notorious for making meals and not remembering to write down ingredients or quantities!  The pie reheats nicely the next day too (that is if you have leftovers!) and the flavour seems to go through the meat, just don’t reheat in the microwave as the pie will go soggy.  I cheat with the puff pastry and buy ready made, but you could aways try your hand at puff pastry too.  I find making short crust pastry quick and easy if you use a food processor or Thermomix.

Short Crust Pastry Ingredients:

1 1/2 c plain flour
100gm butter, diced
3-4 tbspn (approx.) chilled water

Pie Ingredients:

1 kg lean beef mince
2 onions, finely chopped
3 tbsp tomato paste
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp cornflour
1 1/2 cup water
stock powder to taste (I use massel’s Chicken stock powder)
1tsp oil
salt and pepper if desired

2 sheets pre made puff pastry, thawed

1 egg, beaten

Method:

Place butter and flour in food processor and mix until resembles bread crumbs.  Add water, a little at a time until mixture forms a ball.  Remove from food processor and place covered in fridge for at least 30 mins.
Meanwhile, pour oil in a frypan add onions and cook for a couple of minutes.  Add mince and cook until browned.  Stir in Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste.  Mix the cornflour and stock powder into the water before adding to the mince mixture.  Stir until sauce thickens.
Roll out the pastry until it’s about 5mm thick and place in a pie dish approx. 26 cm in diameter.  Trim edges.  Spoon in hot mince mixture.  Brush the pie edge with the beaten egg.  Place the puff pastry on top, trim if needed (I don’t as my kids love the extra puff pastry).  Brush with egg and place holes in the pastry top to allow steam to escape during cooking.  Place in a preheated oven @180 degrees celsius for approximately 20-25 mins or until pastry is lovely and golden brown.  Serve with mashed potato and veggies or on its own!  Serves approx. 6-8 people.

Enjoy!  Jacinta x

Yarn Along

Joining in with Ginny from Small Things this week.

It has been ages since I picked up my knitting.  It seems my shoulder that was giving me trouble and hindering my crafting, has thankfully started to feel a lot better (so long as I don’t over do it).  I’m getting that sinking feeling that Christmas will be upon me before I know it, I am a feeling like I better get my knit on if I’m ever going to get any gifts ready for gifting!

Tonight I started casting on a cowl, it’s my own pattern some of you might remember from earlier in the year, Sweet Memories Cowl.  I am using an Australian yarn called Bliss by Heirloom.  I made a different cowl with this yarn for a friend’s birthday present.  It is lovely and soft against your skin.  I must say it is so exciting to see some of the other Sweet Memories Cowls starting to show up on Ravelry.  The pattern for it is here if you are interested. Makes me want to design more things, I just need a parellel life to do so (don’t we all)!

As for reading, I bought a copy of Country Style magazine today.  It’s an Australia publication and has lots of inspiration for the home and garden.  Always has lovely stories about people and their homes too.  I don’t buy many magazines, but once in a while, this one pops into my shopping basket!
The novel I’m reading currently is called My Last Duchess, by Daisy Goodwin.  I think it is know as American Heiress in other countries though.  Based in the 1800’s, the main character Cora, is a daughter from a very wealthy family, who sets off to Europe to find a suitable husband to marry.  The storyline follows along the trials and tribulations that come with living at that time as a woman.  Sometimes I find the character Cora a little frustrating, but then again, I have to remember that the time period this book is written in, women had very little rights and minds weren’t spoken as they are now.  I will hold my judgement of the book until I have finished it.  I must admit that the cover of the book had a deciding factor in my purchasing it, even if it is a kindle book.

Can’t wait to catch up on what everyone has been crafting and reading.  It seems too long since I last joined in.

A Weekend of Gardening

Greg and I spent the weekend trying to regain our hold on our little piece of paradise.  Oh my the trees around here deposit enough debris to drive the best of gardeners to distraction.  As we live on a fairly steep block, just walking to the letterbox and back is a workout in itself.  Multiply that by 1000, and pushing a wheelbarrow full of debris, who needs a gym!  Greg manned the bonfire and did the work of twenty.  Between kid wrangling and raking the driveway, as well as removing that last of the agapanthus from the backyard, my legs are somewhat reluctant to function normally today.  On the up side, I can now look out and enjoy the view, well except for the back footpath that is currently piled knee high with all the stuff Greg swept off the roof.  The previous people who built the house, designed it with a flat roof.  Not really sure what they were thinking at the time, as it collects everything.  The only bonus is, that the roof is safe to walk on without the worry of falling off easily.

The lawn is all nice and trim again, although with a couple more warm days, that will not last!  Considering it takes Greg 3 hours to mow (4-5 if he has to whipper snip), I know he’d love to only have to mow once a year.

One of the many piles just from the driveway. Photo doesn’t do it justice! I love my Bog boots by the way, so comfy.

Of course being so busy, we forgot to take before and after photos, so we are probably the only ones who will notice a difference, but that’s good enough for me.

Just planning his next adventure.

Of course, the ride in the wheelbarrow at the end of the day is a must, well for those under 5″.

Hope you had a great weekend too?

Enchanted Garden Quilt

My quilt is finished, yay!  Unfortunately the weather hasn’t co operated as yet to use it for a picnic, but I couldn’t wait to show it to you.  Made from a layer cake of Kate Spain’s Good Fortune fabric and backed and binded with Denise Schmit fabric.  These fabrics are of a lovely weight and are gorgeous to sew with.  The batting is of a wool blend.  I used Aurifil 50w cotton to piece it and bind it.  I must say it is lovely cotton and it didn’t tangle when I hand stitched the binding.  I am definitely converted and will be using Aurifil for all my quilts from now on (just want to clarify I’m not being paid to say that, I just like to recommend what I love).

Annalisa the chook overseeing the photo shoot!

The design is my own and I loved every minute of designing it and putting it together.  I will endeavour to write a pattern for it.  Nothing like sharing some crafty love.

Now, I need to have a chat to some weather gods and ask for some lovely fine weather this weekend and ponder what my next quilt will be.  I do say I am addicted.

Where to Buy:

  • The layer cake and Aurifil cotton were purchased through Jane at Want It Need It Quilt it.  Jane is just gorgeous and is lovely to deal with.
  • The Denise Schmit fabric I used for the backing and binding was purchased at Spotlight along with the wool blend batting.

Hungry Caterpillar Hat

I’m so excited to show you Jairah’s finished hat.  I borrowed quite a bit of time from my day yesterday, but so glad I did!  Jairah was more than happy to participate in a photo shoot today and thankfully the weather behaved itself and it didn’t rain.  It was really hard to narrow down which photos to choose, the poser Jairah is.  He is always happy to flash a cheeky smile for the camera.  The hat it fully reversible, so imagine the endless combinations of fabrics you could use.  Some scrap material was salvaged and sewed onto a plain tee-shirt, because we all know it is fun to accessorise, right?  I can happily recommend the pattern.  I made the largest size (21″) for Jairah and although it’s a little too big, it still sits well on his head.  So tempted to make more!  But then, my list of ‘to sew’ items is longer than I may ever have time for, so who knows.

Inside of hat

The pattern for the hat can be found in, Oliver + S, Little Things to Sew, by Leisl Gibson.

I hope you are finding time for the things you love doing too.

Belated Sewing

I had all good intentions of a gifting Jairah at least one thing for his birthday, but alas he has been quite unwell with one evening last week spent in the ER!  Thankfully he seems to be better this week and I am slowly catching up on the backlog of domestic duties after having my arms busy hugging an unwell boy.

I’ve chosen to make the bucket hat out of Oliver + S, Little Things To Sew book by Liesl Gibson.  Jairah loves The Very Hungry Catterpillar book, so when I found the fabric at Spotlight a couple of weeks ago, I bought it, well I should say Jairah saw it and didn’t want to leave without it.  I figured he could do with another hat for the coming summer and I can imagine he will be keen to wear it.  I’ve made a start, and as per all the patterns in the book, it is pretty straight forward.  Fingers crossed I will get it finished in the next few days.  In other sewing news, I have finished the picnic quilt I talked about recently.  Now just waiting for a dry and sunny day to take pictures.

What are you sewing/crafting at the moment.  I always like to know what you crafty people are up to.  Jacinta x
