Quick Sew Pants

I spent just one hour today sewing, and actually finished what I started (shocked, I know!).  I made the Oliver + S Nature Walk pants.  What a lovely simple pattern.  The instructions are very clear and there isn’t much to making them up.  This is an older pattern, so not sure if it is still available.  The sizing goes from 6 months to 4 years.  I made size 3.  They are fairly slim fitting, so those who use cloth nappies/diapers on their little ones may have a little trouble fitting in the tooshie department, other than that, no complaints about the pattern.  I didn’t hem them, as they were the perfect length.  I used cotton/polyester fleece, same stuff tracksuits are made from, which has a nice stretch, so should be nice and cosy for Jairah.  He seems to be going through multiple clothes during the day, due to lots of lovely mud, so they will get plenty of wear.  In fact, I think I might even make him another pair.  I would like some in my size, they would be great for yoga.

Jairah happily posed for photos.  He is such a fun little boy and makes everyday so sunny and bright with just a little mischief mixed in for good measure.  Jacinta x

Yarn Along

Joining in with Ginny at Small Things.

My Tea Leaves cardi is coming along beautifully.  The pattern is so easy to follow and my Knit Pro needles are so lovely, can’t believe I held off so long getting them.  I am knitting any chance I get, but it’s still taking a while to get the body of the cardigan knitted.  It’s kind of like that feeling where you knit and knit and don’t really feel like you have gotten any length added.  Just have to remind myself that knitting the front and back at the same time does take a while, but the thought of not having to sew seams will keep me inspired to keep on knitting.

As for reading, that is pretty much non existant.  I’ve probably only read about five pages of Keeper of the People, by Karah Quinney.  So not much to report there.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the beautiful creations from you all this week.  Jacinta x

Rainy Day Fun – St Erth

We spend yesterday afternoon at the lovely St Erth in Blackwood, Victoria.  My children just love the gardens as there are lots of areas to explore, even better apparently when it is raining.  The kids made the most of the loan umbrella’s, toting them around the gardens, seriously, I love how easily they entertain themselves sometimes.  They all got to choose a packet of seeds or bulbs on our way out, it was more fun than a lolly shop, oh my, and the pressure of having to narrow down their decision to just one thing.  They were too cute ohhing and arring over what they would like.  I can recommend visiting St Erth if ever you are looking for an enjoyable day out.  We were able to take Cardamon in on a lead too which is nice to know for all you doggie owners.  As a Digger’s club member, myself and the kids get in to the gardens for free.  Of course, you don’t have to be a member to visit or buy their products, but they do offer discounts to members.

Tenneille, Jairah and I planted Tenneille’s daffodils today in the glorious sunshine.  We can’t wait to see the daffodil’s sunny faces pop up in a couple of months.

Yarn Along

Joining in with Ginny from Small Things.

I am currently knitting my Tea Leaves cardi.  I am loving the pattern and how nicely it is knitting up.  I am loving the 200gm balls of wool (Bendigo Woollen mills luxury 10 ply).  I’m still on my first ball and almost up to dividing for the sleeves.  I am heading up to my mum’s for a few days, so I am hoping to factor in some serious knitting time.

I think Cardamon wants a knitted cardigan too!

I haven’t read anything at all this week, as all my spare time has been spent knitting.

Looking forward to seeing what you have all been up to this week.  Jacinta x

Norwegian Fish Soup

I just have to share this recipe with you.  Alas, it isn’t my own but it can be found here.  It is so tasty.  For my version of the soup I used a combination of 500gm of salmon and 500gm blue grenadire for the white fish.  Blue grenadire holds its shape well when cooked, so won’t go too flaky in the soup.  A couple of potatoes were added in with the leek and the carrots.  Greg and I ate it for a few meals and it improved in flavour the following day.  So if you find yourself in need of some warming, comforting soul food, this is it.

Cinnamon Scrolls

These scrolls are so yummy.  We make them about once a month as a special treat on the weekend.  It’s really hard not to stop at one.  They smell divine while cooking and are best eaten still warm from the oven with a nice hot cup of tea.  They do take a while to prepare, but they are worth it, trust me.  I use my bread maker to prove the dough, but you can also make them without a bread maker.

Scroll ingredients:

4 cups plain flour
2 eggs
1 cup warm milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup melted butter
3 tsp dry yeast

Filling ingredients:

1 cup brown sugar
2 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/3 cup soften butter

Icing ingredients:

1 1/2 cup pure icing sugar
1/2 cup cream cheese
4 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp vanilla essence

Method:

Place filling ingredients in bread machine and select dough function.  In the meantime, mix filling ingredients with electric beaters until light and soft.  Put aside filling.  Once dough has risen for the desired time in the bread machine, place it on a lightly floured surface and roll out until approximately 1/2 cm thick.  Spread dough surface evenly with filling mix.  Roll the dough up lengthwise.  Cut roll up into 1.5cm pieces (approx, 1″).
Place on baking tray lined with baking paper.  Leave scrolls to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.  In the meantime, beat the icing ingredients in a bowl and set aside.  Place scrolls in a pre-heated oven @180 degrees celsius (350F) for approximately 12 minutes or until golden brown.  Once removed from the oven, place scrolls on a plate and top with icing mixture.

Enjoy!  Jacinta x

Yarn Along

I am excited to say Jairah’s Askel vest is off the needles.  I didn’t need to block it much and it fits him beautifully.  It worked out about a size 4 which is what I was hoping for.  I can’t say that Askel is the best written pattern I have had to follow.  Maybe a little was lost in translation?  Thankfully I was able to mull through the pattern and work out what I needed to do.  I did use 8 ply and 3.75mm and 4mm needles which was different to what the pattern called for, so made my own little changes along the way.  The yarn I used was Moda Vera Pure wool.  I was a little splitty, but has washed up beautifully with a lovely silky feeling.  The stripes were done using scraps of wool I had in my stash.  Speaking of stripes, as the vest is knitted in the round, I wanted to avoid the ‘jog’ that can occur when you change colours for knitting stripes.  Watching this video was a great help and so simple.  I’m sure some of you already know the trick, but for those who don’t, it is worth watching.

I cast on my Tea Leaves cardi tonight.  I am loving the yarn I ordered.  It is the most beautiful ruby colour and feels lovely and soft.  I ordered it through Bendigo Woollen Mills and their delivery was quick.  I love that is in made here in Victoria with Australia wool too.

As for reading.  I just started reading a book called Keeper of the People, by Karah Quinney.  I can’t tell you much about it, as I have only read a few pages, but so far, so good.

Looking forward to seeing what you have all been crafting and reading too.  Jacinta x
